Why Grow Flowers Under Cover:

Every experienced grower knows the point of flower greenhouse range production: under cover you control temperature, light, humidity and carbon dioxide concentration, so the crop comes out as quality horticultural products instead of whatever the season allows. The seasonal restriction on flower growth is broken, so production and supply of flowers run through the whole year. It also lets you introduce and nurture species that are not suited to open-field cultivation locally, because the house creates the facility environment they need. With modern spray and drip irrigation hardware, flowers grown this way carry real competitiveness as export products.

Temperature Bands to Plan Around:

Most greenhouse flowers are not hardy and will not overwinter in cold temperate regions, so the house has to meet their needs, and those needs differ by species. Four bands cover the common crop list. Cold room flowers sit at 2 to 5 degrees Celsius and include foliage plants such as bamboo palm and cycads. Low temperature flowers are semi hardy at 5 to 8 degrees, Primula being typical. Temperature greenhouse flowers come mostly from the subtropics and want 8 to 15 degrees, such as Calceolaria and fuchsias. High temperature flowers are tropical and are held at 15 to 25 degrees, Codiaeum being the common example. Knowing which band your flowers occupy tells you how much heating the house really needs.

Roof Shape and Where to Build:

The sawtooth roof in the second photo is a practical choice for a first flower house: each vertical saw face carries a vent, so warm air escapes continuously without fans. Site the house on land with a low water table, adequate water, convenient drainage and irrigation, and loose, fertile, pollution-free soil, and set it to run north to south with air vents on the east and west sides. That layout reduces humidity inside, keeps the bays from shading each other so light falls evenly, and stops winter ventilation from dragging cold northern air straight onto the crop while still moving plenty of air. Comparable tunnel and polytunnel houses from the wider commercial greenhouse catalogue follow the same siting rules.

Running the House Day to Day:

Daily work is mostly water and air. The potted bromeliads in the first photo are bench grown and watered in measured doses, because flowers hate wet foliage: spray and drip lines from our misting and drip irrigation equipment put water at the root ball, and the vents take the moisture out before botrytis can start. Feed little and often, keep the walkways clean, and check the temperature bands after every sudden weather change rather than trusting one season's settings.

Ordering and Support:

Tell us the flowers you want to grow and the site you have, and we will come back with a roof shape, a vent layout and an equipment list that suit them. You can read about Bozong Greenhouse, call +86 191 5068 3942 or send an E-mail to sales@cngreenhouses.com.

We have supplied growers and project contractors across Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and Latin America for many years. Crop production guidance is published by institutions such as the USDA, and horticulture industry news is reported by trade media such as Horticulture Week.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What does a sawtooth roof do for a flower greenhouse?
A: Each vertical saw face carries a vent, so warm humid air escapes continuously without fans. It is a simple, low-cost way to keep humidity down in a first flower house.
Q: Which temperature band do Calceolaria and fuchsias need?
A: They are subtropical temperature greenhouse flowers, usually maintained at 8 to 15 degrees Celsius, between the semi hardy Primula group at 5 to 8 degrees and tropical Codiaeum at 15 to 25 degrees.
Q: Can I grow flowers that do not survive my winter outdoors?
A: Yes. That is one of the main reasons to build: the house creates the facility environment the species needs, so non-hardy flowers can be produced year round in cold temperate districts.
Q: How should I water potted flowers in a greenhouse?
A: Drip to the root ball in measured doses rather than spraying over the foliage. Flowers hate wet leaves, and dry foliage is your cheapest botrytis control.
Q: Which way should the house face?
A: North to south, with the air vents on the east and west sides. This reduces humidity, evens out the light between bays, and keeps cold northern air out of winter ventilation.
Q: Is a sawtooth film house or a tunnel better for a first flower house?
A: Both work on the same siting rules. Sawtooth vents continuously and suits warmer districts; tunnels are cheaper per square meter and suit growers who will add fans or roll-up sides. Tell us your crop and climate and we will recommend one.
